Rising Voices Writing Challenge, Fall 2024:
“Tell Me a Story”

Greetings! Tomie Hahn and Hannah Snavely here.

Do you have a story that doesn’t quite fit in your dissertation? A moment from fieldwork that you’re still processing and would love to write out? If so, this challenge is for you!

We are excited to invite you to participate in our current writing challenge, “Tell Me a Story.”

Instructions:

Tell us a story, 1,000 words or less, that you encountered/discovered/composed during your research, courses, or service. Feel free to be playful and/or experimental while writing. Write your story with lush details, yet remain concise.

Here are some things you might consider sharing. They are ONLY suggestions! We hope they inspire you and help get you started:

  • a story that stretched your understanding of your field site or project

  • a story that sent you back to the drawing board

  • a story that didn’t fit in your dissertation, but continues to haunt you

  • a story that that elicited a strong emotional response from you

  • a story whose significance you initially misread

  • a story that you interpret differently from others

  • a story that makes you uncomfortable

  • a funny story

Submit your response as a doc/docx file, but do not include your name. Please email your response to risingvoicesjournal@gmail.com, and in the email include your name and current affiliation.

The top works will be published in the Fall/Winter 2024 issue of Rising Voices, selected by a committee of faculty and RV staff.

Deadline: September 15, 2024

Have any questions? If so, please email risingvoicesjournal@gmail.com

We look forward to reading your responses!
