Work with Us
Call for Applications: Copy Editor
Rising Voices is currently seeking a new Copy Editor to join its student-led team. Applicants should be students currently registered in a graduate degree program and conducting music research in ethnomusicology or a related field/discipline. The Copy Editor will begin work on the Spring/Summer 2025 issue, with advising from our outgoing Copy Editor. They will then take on full responsibility for the role with the Fall/Winter 2025 issue. This role carries a minimum 2-year (4-issue) commitment, so Master’s and early-stage Doctoral Students are particularly encouraged to apply.
The copy editor is responsible for having a deep knowledge of our internal style guide as well as Chicago Manual of Style author-date formatting (see Ethnomusicology and recent issues of Rising Voices for examples). In collaboration with the Editors, they will review pre-published drafts of articles with a particular focus on spelling, punctuation, and bibliographic entries. They will also periodically need to do small research tasks in the event where we have questions or disagreements over style elements. Lastly, they will generally work on 2–3 articles per issue along with the associate editor team, providing general feedback and comments on article structure and argument.
Screened applicants will be provided with a short piece to edit, containing stylistic, grammatical, and formatting issues. They will be asked to edit the piece within a two-day period and return it to the editors containing track comments indicating corrections and suggestions.
To apply, please send a CV along with a brief statement of your experience and interest (~350 words) to risingvoicesjournal@gmail.com by January 31, 2025. Early submissions are welcome and will be given priority.
