Music, Medicine, Health, and Cognition: A Resource List

Introduction

The following resource list is a companion piece to SEM Student News Volume 9 on medical and cognitive ethnomusicologies. We expand on the newsletter's topics to provide a more inclusive variety of publications and online resources, all of which relate to health, medical, and cognitive studies in music. The categories that follow are flexible and overlap, and are simply offered as a means of organizing a large amount of publications covering diverse yet related topics. The medical and cognitive ethnomusicology fields are relatively new, and correspondingly cultivate considerable scholarly excitement and activity, but because there are limited publications which are specifically located within the discipline of ethnomusicology, we have widened our scope to include publications from other disciplines involving the study of music from standpoints of health, medicine, and cognition. Therefore, as much research is conducted by non-music scholars, readers will find themselves crossing multiple disciplinary boundaries when engaging with these publications. As a note, please know that some of the publications below are collections or journals (single issues and full runs) that comprise numerous authors’ contributions to these fields of study, but not all of their contents are specifically cited.

In our search for medical ethnomusicology-related publications and resources (Part I: Health and Medical Ethnomusicology), we take into consideration various disciplinary fields that explore world cultures, music, and healing, and our organization intends to reflect these various topics and interests. We begin with A. Publications, separated into five general categories. 1. Medical Ethnomusicology features seminal publications in this burgeoning field. 2. Music and (Ethno)Medicine contains publications investigating the relationships between music and medicine. 3. Musical Healing denotes studies which illuminate musics in/as healing process(es). 4. Music as Therapy and Multicultural Music Therapy highlights publications which discuss music therapy within (multi)cultural contexts. 5. Medical Anthropology contains a select number of anthropological works pertaining to the cultural study of health and medicine. Online resources for medical ethnomusicology are currently limited, and we have included resources at the intersection of music and health/medicine. Their organization is self-explanatory, and divided into three sections: B. Online Communities, and official websites for C. Programs and Institutions and D. Societies and Conferences.

The cognitive studies publications below (Part II: Music and Cognition) pertain to the study of conscious mental activities (thinking, understanding, learning, remembering) and processes of musical behavior and experience (creation, perception, response, etc.). Cognitive ethnomusicological studies, which contextualize themselves within musical culture, are not in abundance, and as such we have broadened our scope to include various music-centered studies. We begin with A. Publications, separated into four categories: 1. Cognitive Ethnomusicology/Culture-centered Music Cognition includes publications within the discipline of ethnomusicology and various cultural approaches. 2. Music Perception, Cognition, Trance, and Emotion contains studies in music cognition and states of consciousness. 3. Music and Neuroscience features publications from neuroscientific perspectives, while 4. Music Psychology does so from the perspective of psychology. Online resources for music cognition are in fair abundance and comprise five sections. B. Blogs and C. Online Communities highlight virtual activity pertaining to music and cognition. The last three sections consist of official websites for D. Programs and Institutions, E. Societies, and F. Conferences worldwide.

This resource list is by no means exhaustive, and omissions (whether deliberate or due to oversight) are unavoidable. As such, please do not hesitate to suggest pertinent publications which have been omitted, are new, or forthcoming. Likewise, we are open to suggestions for online resources, including communities, blogs, institutions, society and conference websites, and other virtual resources.
