The Writing Challenge for the 2024 fall issue of Rising Voices journal invited readers to respond to the following prompt:

Tell us a story, 1,000 words or less, that you encountered/discovered/composed during your research, courses, or service. Feel free to be playful and/or experimental while writing. Write your story with lush details, yet remain concise.

The challenge yet again brought in a number of exciting submissions. The submissions hailed from across the globe, providing a wonderful perspective of the diversity of fieldwork experiences of graduate students. The committee—Peter Verdin and Sara Fazeli (who wrote top papers from the previous challenge), Garrett Groesbeck (Rising Voices Co-Editor), and I (Tomie Hahn)—enjoyed reading all of the submissions. We found the works compelling, creative, and rich in sensory and emotive detail.
